AIRAH Talk 'Thermal Energy Storage and District Cooling Case Study'

Innotech's Queensland Sales Manager, Ben Macdonald, will be presenting at the AIRAH Talk 'Thermal Energy Storage and District Cooling Case Study: A Very Cool School, North Queensland Style' on 6th May 2014 in Brisbane.

Join AIRAH for a thermal energy storage (TES) and district cooling case study of the $40 million Mackay Northern Beaches State High School. The building houses years 7–12, and includes a multipurpose sports facility that is also designed to function as a community cyclone shelter.

Ben Macdonald, Affil.AIRAH, of Innotech Control Systems, an AIRAH Company Member, will provide an insight into the project, with a focus on back‐to‐basics. He will cover:

  • CHW primary‐secondary system control fundamentals
  • CHW thermal energy storage control fundamentals
  • Benefits of high‐level energy meters on large chilled water plants.

Brett Beeson is a mechanical services engineer at Lehr Consultants International. His expertise is in low‐energy mechanical systems, ESD consultancy, building rating tools, and building computer simulations. Brett will provide an overview of the Mackay project, expanding on its TES and district chilled‐water system. His overview will cover:

  • TES diffuser design, tanks, insulation and piping
  • Structured controls specification of TES systems
  • What worked, what didn’t, and the X‐factors.

Queensland state manager for Air Change, Mark Hams, M.AIRAH, will provide a summary of the CALMAC Icebank Ice Storage technology and its use in Australia. He will discuss its key benefits, including potential operational cost savings and where it is suitable for use in mechanical services design, as well as general application and design considerations.
